Top 14 Vacation Houses in America (and Their Location)

Are You Looking for A Vacation House for Your Next Trip?

Since we now live in a world where major travel plans imply visiting a big city, I feel like small towns have become some sort of well-kept secret.

However, we shouldn’t forget that there are plenty of advantages to setting aside a couple of vacation days to relax in places that are more off the beaten path.

For instance, the best small towns in America are a great choice when it comes to relaxation and adventure, especially with those picture-perfect downtown neighborhoods surrounded by the country’s most breathtaking landscapes.

And if you ask me, there’s no better way to enjoy the scenery than in your own private cottage. I know, I know, it sounds expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Here’s a list we made with some of the best houses around the country and where you can find them:

Avalon, California

When you hear Avalon, you instantly think of water, so all the properties are overlooking the coast, and they are obviously prime real estate. This oceanfront villa also delivers on various different fronts, as it has walls of windows and a covered balcony affording unobstructed views of the harbor.

Moreover, the one-bedroom rental is ideal for a couple’s retreat or even a solo trip, and the Spanish-style architecture and decor will definitely make you feel as if you’ve jetted somewhere in Europe rather than sunny California.

Bar Harbor, Maine

In downtown Bar Harbor, you’re going to find one of the most unique accommodations in the entire city. First of all, it’s worth mentioning that the building served as a convent in the early 1900s, and you can still notice remnants of the house’s history.

There are intricate stained glass windows, arched wooden doors, and the original private entrance to the chapel’s confessional, as well as towering beam ceilings.

If, somehow, you decide to book the listing, you might as well invite your entire family, because the house has eight bedrooms and can accommodate up to 16 people.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island is the ideal New England getaway, especially because of all the lighthouses and seagrass-lined beaches. As the small downtown area is a wonderful place to stock up on antiques, you might want to spend most of your time close to the water.

In this case, a beach house is your best bet. The cedar-singled, three-bedroom house sits somewhere above a private rocky beach, and you can watch the landscape from every angle of the living room.

Moreover, the upper-level bedroom suite will provide other outstanding views, and on rainy days, you can take a soak in the clawfoot tub or simply grab a book and curl up in a cozy plush armchair.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

It’s a bit hard to imagine a better rental in Cannon Beach than a three-bedroom house, which basically showcases the outstanding Oregon coast with easy beach access, windows, and a deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

You also have a direct view of the famous Haystack Rock from your living room. On top of that, the light wood-paneled interiors and gray-shuttered facade resemble Nancy Meyers’ personal vision board.

Cape May, New Jersey

There are so many things to love about Cape May, whether you would rather choose a Victorian charm somewhere hidden in the downtown area or the beachy, breezy vibes closer to the shore.

This time, we’re going to mention a rental that represents the latter, which is a recently renovated beach house with four bedrooms and two super-spacious decks overlooking the water.

To say that it’s close to the ocean would be an understatement, and that’s because in a five-second walk, you’re basically at the ocean.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

If you ever dreamed of living in any of the two houses from “The Holiday,” then you might want to go for a Carmel-by-the-Sea rental. If you’re truly craving a cottage experience, you can sip tea in the two- bedrooms’s manicured gardens or even read a book on the window seat.

Then, when you’re craving some high-tech luxury, the large screen and kitchen are waiting for you, with the latest additions in terms of housewares.

Deadwood, South Dakota

If you want to know what we think, we’d say that Deadwood has major Old West vibes, so you shouldn’t expect to see any modern comforts during your visit.

There are plenty of extremely stylish three-story cabins that would accommodate you and your family on a relaxing trip, away from all the hassle and bustle of a crowded city. Isn’t this what we’re all looking for, in the end?

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a small town tucked away somewhere in the Ozark Mountains, which is also one of the gems in the Midwest. So many cabins out there were strategically built to take full advantage of their surroundings.

You will notice that they’re close enough to the main downtown area but still far away from it, so you can enjoy some adequate leisure time.

Friday Harbor, Washington

Surrounded by trees and next to Griffin Bay, there’s a gated estate in Friday Harbor that’s probably one of the best places to go for a family vacation.

It has four bedrooms, a spacious common area, and a series of expansive grounds that also include a hot tub and badminton court. Moreover, the house is only three miles from Friday Harbor, and you can visit the farmers market and eat at 5-star restaurants.

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Harpers Ferry is filled with history and somehow protected by amazing landscapes. On top of that, the rentals are as traditional as the town itself.

This only makes the eclectic two-bedroom Airbnbs stand out more, especially thanks to their colorful walls and mix of vintage and modern decor.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island must be one of the most famous locations, especially because of its historic Club Resort. However, visitors can choose from a series of rental options.

Make sure you check out all the spacious townhouses available on Airbnb. Most of them have four bedrooms, a charming porch where you can drink your coffee, and a community pool.

Guests can walk to the beach by taking the boardwalk that’s winding through the forest. It sounds so dreamy!

Ketchikan, Alaska

If you truly want to get away from everything, you really can’t do any better than an oceanfront cabin. A three-bedroom home offers you the perfect opportunity to connect with nature.

In fact, if you manage to plan your visit the right way, you might encounter breaching whales and bald eagles without needing to leave your porch.

Lake Placid, New York

Do you have Adirondacks on your bucket list? If so, you definitely need to stay in a log cabin; otherwise, the experience isn’t properly lived! Look for a five-bedroom cabin (which at times might be more of a chalet) that has everything you need: cushy furniture, sheepskin rugs, a cozy stone fireplace, and also a spacious back deck with cozy chairs.

You might find some amazing houses that are only a 15-minute drive away from Whiteface Mountain.

Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth was initially named after the villages of Bavaria, Germany. Well, I think you can tell. What’s even better is that you can find some of the coziest and dreamiest cottages there that seem directly taken from a Grimm fairytale.

Every single detail of the log cabin is specifically thought to add to its overall coziness. I’m talking vaulted wood ceilings, stone fireplaces, and handmade velvet curtains. Royal treatment for you!
